About Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an archipelago consisting of over 47 islands situated off the east coast of Tanzania‚ Africa. Unguja – colloquially called Zanzibar‚ Pemba and Mafia (administratively part of mainland Tanzania) are the main islands and attract visitors from all over the world. Zanzibar is semi-autonomous‚ with its own elected government. Tanzania was formed a little over 50 years ago through the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

Zanzibar island is approx 64km (40m) or a mere 20 minute flight from the mainland/Dar es Salaam. Zanzibar’s capital is Zanzibar City within which is found Stone Town‚ on the south western shores and home to Zanzibar International Airport‚ 10-15 mins drive from town.

Zanzibar Airport

Zanzibar International airport (IACO HTZA; IATA ZNZ)‚ named after the first president of the island‚ Abeid Amani Karume‚ 5 km from Zanzibar City / Stone Town. It is one of the 3 international airports of Tanzania. (Dar es Salaam‚ Kilimanjaro being the other 2) The airport itself has the basic facilities to ensure comfortable departures and arrivals procedures for visitors. For longer waits‚ outside the terminal buildings are a number of cafes and restaurants with good wifi.

Both local‚ regional and international flights are serviced from the airport‚ with domestic departures and arrivals using a separate passenger entrance‚ exit and wait area.
